History of Gilmer and Pittsburg:
Gilmer, established in 1846, owes its name to Thomas Jefferson Gilmer, a former U.S. Secretary of the Navy. Initially, the town emerged as a hub for agricultural trade due to its fertile soil and strategic location along major transportation routes. However, it wasn’t until the discovery of oil in the early 20th century that Gilmer experienced significant growth and economic prosperity. The oil boom transformed the town’s landscape, attracting investors, workers, and entrepreneurs, and establishing Gilmer as a prominent player in the East Texas oil industry. Over time, Gilmer diversified its economy, incorporating manufacturing, healthcare, and education sectors, while preserving its historical charm and small-town atmosphere. In contrast, Pittsburg’s history is deeply rooted in its role as a center for iron manufacturing and railroad transportation. Founded in 1852, Pittsburg quickly flourished due to its abundant natural resources, including iron ore deposits and timber, coupled with its strategic position along the Texas and Pacific Railway. The establishment of iron foundries and sawmills propelled Pittsburg into a leading industrial hub, attracting settlers seeking employment opportunities and economic prosperity. The city’s iron industry reached its zenith during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, contributing significantly to Texas’ industrial growth and development. Despite facing challenges such as economic downturns and shifting industries, Pittsburg has remained resilient, leveraging its historical legacy and natural resources to foster a diverse economy centered around manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. Today, both Gilmer and Pittsburg stand as testaments to Texas’ rich heritage and enduring spirit of enterprise.

There were spiders everywhere. Every door I opened had some sort of bug or spider on it or right inside the door. Also spiders crawling around in the units or making webs in the corner…kinda disappointing. I at least expected the climate controlled area to be bug free. Update: The facility reached out to me and provided a solution to the problem. Hopefully spraying for them will keep the spiders away!
